Organizational form for projects in line organizations

Matrix organization is a functional project organization. It displays competences and responsibilities of the project manager and staff. There are two types of the organizational possibilities. The project staff has several line managers excluding project manager. All project staff is assigned to the project for a certain time and should receive the information from the project manager as well as from the respective execution-related departments and object-related product managers. This employment relationship is organized in the form of multi-line organization, namely matrix organization.

Such overlapping of responsibilities and authorities often leads to the great communication effort and to the unclear responsibilities. The advantage is therefore in the flexibility of employees at work on the project or on the line; the use of the specialist knowledge without any obstacles; promotion of the interdisciplinary/interdepartmental thinking.
